Google Dance Tool

Webmasters want to top Google's rankings and Google wants to offer the best quality results for search terms entered. Sometimes conflict arises here - websites will try to work out how Google's search algorithm works and then adapt their pages to perform better. So Google updates its algorithm again to try to weed out sites that are tricking it into a higher ranking than they deserve.

Search engine optimisation isn't a one-off: even once you top Google's listing, new sites will be launched and your competitors will continue to exchange links and promote their pages. It's possible for new sites to rank more highly than yours and for your competitors to overtake you through more aggressive (or at least, more effective) promotion.

The moving around of sites in Google's index is known as the Google Dance - particularly when Google's algorithms are changed significantly and certain types of website suffer a massive drop in their ranking.

This Google Dance tool will let you see how your site is likely to be affected by changes in Google's index. You can preview future versions of the index at www2.google.com and www3.google.com and this tool will let you see the results from the current and www2 and www3 indexes side by side.

Enter your search keywords (not your URL) into the box and click the box to start the Google Dance.
