About this photo
The Steen is Antwerp's oldest building and can trace its history back to earth fortifications built in the 9th century. The stone wall and gatehouse were built around 1100-1200 AD. This fortress was used as a prison until 1823 and saw use as a home, saw mill and warehouse before opening to the public in 1862 as a museum.
