The Tiananmen, also known as the Gate of Heavenly Peace, was first built in 1420 and is a symbol of China, featuring on the National Emblem. In 1949, Mao Zedong announced the foundation of the People's Republic of China from the gate. His portrait on the gate is replaced each year. You can walk through the gate, but only from south to north (from Tiananmen Square towards the Forbidden City) at the time we were there.
