Panorama of photographs taken at the top of the London BT Tower

Photo of top of BT Tower

The BT Tower, formerly known as The London Telecom Tower and The Post Office Tower, is now closed to the public. But on 11 March 2004, I had a chance to go to the top as part of a press event organised by BT. They even cranked it up so the top slowly rotated and London's panorama rolled by, almost imperceptibly gradually.

I took a camera along, but the view was misty and murky so I didn't get it out at first. You see things differently through a camera lens and I wanted to appreciate the view. After about half an hour I started getting itchy about not taking any pictures though and decided to give it a go.

I tried to take a picture covering the view from all the way around. It was complicated by the fact that the tower was moving and some of the windows were inaccessible. I didn't have a tripod, so the heights vary slightly as well. That said, I do have a complete set showing the view from the top of the tower.

I've put the pictures in order here, so you too can admire the view I had.

We could make out London landmarks such as St Paul's Cathedral and Canary Wharf (just about) and could see King's Cross and London Zoo clearly. Because of the compression used in putting these photos on the web, you're unlikely to be able to see that far that clearly, but you've got a good view of the British Museum's domed roof and can make out the London Eye in the distance.
