I was surprised to discover an office and school stationery shop that had all these golden statues of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk in the window. He was the first president of Turkey and his likeness appears in school rooms and public buildings throughout Turkey, I have since learned. His surname means 'father of the Turks'.
