Photo of AKB48 pachinko machines in Tokyo, Japan

This photo shows a set of AKB48 pachinko machines. Pachinko is a game that traditionally was mechanical, but increasingly has video features built-in. Tiny silver balls are fired into the screen and fall down it, and as they bounce off pins in different directions, they can trigger different events in the game. The game is like a cross between pinball, bagatelle and a slot machine. These machines are branded with AKB48, a Japanese idol girl group that originally had 48 members, and which has become a huge cultural phenomenon in Japan.
