Book blocs were first used in Italy at demonstrations against education cuts, to push back against police baton strikes and punches. These three shields were designed in tribute to To Kill a Mockingbird, The Happy Prince, and De-Schooling Society. The first of these was used in demonstrations against a library closure in New York. The closure was cancelled, in part due to the book bloc protests. These book blocs were part of the Disobedient Objects exhibition at the V&A Museum in London.
