I was working near Victoria station when Princess Diana died in 1997. I took a trip up to Buckingham Palace to see the tributes left there by a mourning public. As this photo shows, people left flowers, balloons, letters, flags and soft toys. People also drew pictures and wrote poems. I have another photo which shows the ladies from the WRVS processing and binning the dead flowers. I was surprised at the amount of grief people felt, and the way they chose to express it. The money spent on flowers could have done so much good if given to a charity instead.
