Using IE for FTP
17 July 2005
I've written a short tutorial on using Internet Explorer as an FTP client. IE's not up to the job of uploading big websites. But it is useful for quick fixes and for managing small sites. It's particularly useful that it's installed on most computers, so if your site needs updating at short notice, you can edit it without any additional software on the nearest PC.

Virtual Sean updated
In December 2000, I wrote an article for Internet Magazine about creating virtual helpers and avatars for your website. Since then, Virtual Sean has been chatting with visitors on this site, using both on-screen text and a free speech plug-in.
The cartoon I drew of myself five years ago doesn't look very much like me any more, and I've always wanted to return and improve the interactivity. Now I've given Virtual Sean a makeover using graphics from Janina Norn's South Park Studio. I've also added in animation and given his language skills a boost.
Random Name Generator
16 July 2005
If you have as much trouble thinking up character names for your fiction writing as I do, this random name generator will come in handy. It creates random firstname/surname pairs using US census data. You can adjust how common the names are. They all sound a bit American, but put the obscurity rating up to full and you'll discover some great names to give to your story's villains and rock stars.
